Universal Exhibition
07/08-12/09
Swiss pavilion / Geneva

The City of Geneva has chosen to present its “local urban international produce which may, at first glance, appear contradictory. Almost 41% of Geneva’s population comes from abroad, and many res-taurants are des ethnic”. Typical Genevan dish-es more often than not include pizza and kebab rather than fondue and local sausage “longeole”. The City has comis-sioned the HEAD to share, in a novel way, this “Geneva spirit”, defined by its openness to the world and its multiculturalism, with visitors to the city. The installations interpret this coming together of tastes from around the world with locally produced ingredients by telling the stories of ten restaurants from different cultures and identities.

CHIMERA is the result of collaboration between the interior architecture sector and that of visual communication. Both chains belong to the High School of Art and Design in Geneva (HEAD).

CHIMERA The Project is led by Camille De Dieux and Giona Bierens de Haan, respectively assistants visual communication and interior architecture. Under the responsibility of Jerome Baratelli and Jan Geipel.

Installations

The students of the HEAD - Geneva have been invited by the City of Geneva to work around a selection of 10 restaurants with different nationalities in order to absorb the multicultural spirit and give a new look to this culinary scene. The students have analyzed the information collected and have them synthesized to be able to extract from them topics related to food. Their eyes have been turned towards food stains, chefs movements, as water networks provide establishments, and towards the color of the dishes. The projects exposed today have arisen out of this interest.

Visual identity

The visual identity of Chimera is just like the projects presented with their rough esthetics, which shows everything based on its manufacturing elements. It draws down the internet visual codes through its hypertext links and its pop-up windows. Different media have been created in this way for the needs of the exhibition. The printed media have arisen out of the necessity to provide a quick and efficient reading of the information related to the artworks without paraphrasing them. The information are distributed randomly on panels to give them a dynamism and the pop-up principle which can be found on all the internet interfaces. The internet site has been developed with the same color codes and the same esthetics than the printed media. It brings additional information regarding artworks and allows to give them a context.
